Iâd just settled into writerâs mode on the bed in my suite when someone tapped on the door.
âRoom service,â Daniel said.
I should have known that would happen. I didnât want to face him. I wanted to forget him. âJust leave it, and Iâll grab it in a second. Thanks.â
He tapped again. âZoe, you canât avoid me forever.â
My cell phone rang. Iâd checked messages last night and texted with my editor and must have not put it back on do not disturb. âSorry, phoneâs ringing. Itâs my agent. Iâve got to take this.â
âWe need to talk, Zoe.â
âHey, hold for a second, okay?â I said to Leslie, my agent. I hesitated, but walked to the door and opened it. Daniel grinned, and I took the tray of food from him. âI canât right now. Phone call and book to write.â I conjured up a smile. âThanks for bringing this up.â I closed the door to Daniel with his mouth hanging open.
âHey Leslie, whatâs up? You scouting other publishers for me?â
âDonât be silly. Just checking in. Wanted to see how the trip and book are coming along.â
âSo far, so good. Iâm almost finished, actually. Maybe another two days at the most, and I can get it to the editor and get back to my life in Atlanta. This nature stuff is wearing on me.â
âAre you having fun at least?â
âI guess. I mean, itâs been interesting, thatâs for sure. Hey, can you do me a favor?â
âYou name it.â
âThereâs this author Iâd like you to check out. Heâs staying here too, and he told me heâs with a small press, but he got a package from my publisher, and it doesnât make sense.â I filled her in on Danielâs info.
âNot familiar with him, so he canât be all that popular,â Leslie said. I heard her typing on a keyboard. âWell, heâs for real at least. Iâm on his website now.â
âIâve seen it, too. Itâs just strange. He lied about the package, and I saw the label.â
âWhat does it matter?â
I shook my head, more for myself than my agent. âIt doesnât, I guess. I justâ¦weâ¦I donât know. Can you just look into it for me, please?â
âIf itâll help you finish that book, of course I will.â
âGreat, thank you. I appreciate it.â
âIâll check back with you in a bit.â
We hung up, and I took a big bite out of the sandwich, realizing then my stomach needed the sustenance.
Two hours later Daniel knocked on my door again. âZoe, please. I donât know what I did, but Iâd like to talk to you about it.â
I cracked open the door, and let him in.
âYou know, donât you?â
I sat on the edge of the bed, my hands tucked under my legs. âIââ
âYou saw, didnât you? Thatâs why youâre giving me the cold shoulder.â
âSaw what?â
âI spoke to Leslie.â
Heaviness weighted down my lungs, and I struggled to take in enough hair. âLeslie?â
âShe told me you saw the label on the package, from our publisher.â He moved toward the bed.
âOurâwhat?â I flew from my comfy spot and flipped around to face Daniel, whoâd just sat next to my empty space.
